Let’s start with a proper introduction. We’re the Ott family – Gene, Jane, Nick (son) and Danielle, (daughter in law) and we acquired the property in 2000. Originally from Northeast Iowa, we had been scout leaders and Boundary Waters Minnesota camping enthusiasts for several years when the opportunity arose to make a lifestyle change that simply delighted us. Since that time, we have built an outfitting service that, we believe, is one of the best in the area. In addition to outfitting services, we have authentic log cabins, right on Fall Lake for non-campers to experience great fishing and conveniently explore the Ely area.
Our cabins and lodge (with bunkhouse) have an amazing history. The cabins were originally built and located up on Pipestone Bay on Basswood Lake. When Congress declared “The Wilderness Act of 1964, all buildings needed to be either moved or burnt to the ground, restoring the natural wilderness. Shortly after, each log was labeled, deconstructed, floated up through Newton Lake to Fall Lake and put back together, like a complex jigsaw puzzle. Can you imagine the planning and the work to accomplish this?
We’re honored by every guest that chooses Packsack and promise to make every effort to build a wilderness experience that best matches your wishes.
With access to 4 lakes, this laid-back, year-round resort in the Superior National Forest was built in 1919, and is 4 miles from the International Wolf Center.
Simple 2- to 8-bedroom cabins have mini-fridges, microwaves and coffeemakers, plus lake views, fire pits and decks. Suites feature 1 or 2 bedrooms, and add full kitchens and/or covered decks.
Our rustic bar serves up a great Bloody Mary and homemade pizzas. Other amenities include a 40-person sauna, a swimming beach, fishing docks, and a marina with boat rentals. There’s also a fish-cleaning house, a game room and a playground.

In 1989, the painting was sold for $510,000.00 to a New York gallery and the City of Ely established the Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust to enrich the community through arts grants and scholarships.

The Ely-Winton History Museum desires to help you understand the land in which we live and what it offered to the people who lived here.
A community arose as people from diverse backgrounds came here to make a living and fulfill their dreams. The museum interprets what these people experienced in this land, what they strove for, how they coped with problems, what they achieved, and what they have passed down to their descendants. Using photographs, maps and artifacts, the displays present the different phases of 12,000 years of local history from prehistoric to the present.
